Lighting Matters More Than You Think

A few years ago we touched on LED lighting upgrades in a blog. This topic all came back to me recently when I was speaking with a client about updating the lighting in his showroom. A number of lights were out and those that were on just weren’t bright enough and some were varied temperatures.  It made the whole showroom feel dull and lackluster. When I broached the subject of looking into upgrading his lighting, he said “lights don’t sell me one more (expletive) car”. I told him we’d have to agree to disagree. It made me think it’s time to take a deeper dive into facility lighting.

In today’s competitive automotive sales environment, first impressions are everything. This is why LED lighting is a game-changer for car dealerships. Whether it’s the bright shine of a new car’s finish or the welcoming glow of the showroom, lighting plays a critical role. Upgrading to quality LED lighting offers a range of benefits for car dealerships, from energy efficiency and cost savings to enhanced visibility and a better client experience.

A Word of Caution: Don’t Just Swap Bulbs – Upgrade Properly

Many Dealers are sold that LED upgrades can be accomplished by simply replacing the bulb in an existing fixture.  It’s absolutely not as easy as that and could do more harm than good. Switching to LED bulbs in existing fixtures can lead to:

  • Electrical compatibility issues, risking flicker or even fire hazards
  • Improper heat dissipation or Inadequate Thermal Management, reduces LED lifespan and performance
  • Potential Code violations or insurance risks, especially in commercial spaces
  • Not qualified for incentives, most Retail Energy Providers have disqualified replacement bulbs for energy efficiency rebates
  • Lower Efficacy requires much higher lumen output to achieve lumen level requirements

Do it right. Upgrading to LED via new LED fixtures, or UL approved LED conversion kits is the only proper way to ensure optimal lighting performance, safety and ROI.

Lighting is a science. Many local governments have tight restrictions on lighting and “spillover” lighting to adjacent properties – especially in residential areas. Working with a lighting specialist will always improve the end result, and in most cases, not add significant cost – if any.

Lighting is too Important to “Just” Leave to the Electrical Contractor

It’s important to understand that as part of the manufacturer’s image program, a lot of thought has gone into lighting design and specification.  As previously mentioned, lighting plays a critical role in the look and feel of the store.  We’ve seen time and again where the Electrical Contractor goes and sources “equivalent” lighting from the local electrical distributor. It’s usually what’s on the shelf, and least expensive. In one recent case it was all Asian sourced lighting which was exactly the same product that was available off the shelf from a national retail chain – for less than the client was being charged by the EC.

We reached out to Joe Spain at CED Automotive, a company that specializes in dealership lighting design and supply.  Here’s what he said “Our total focus is on lighting for the automotive industry. Our team looks at the architect’s reflected ceiling plan and we then run it through our own analysis. All to confirm lighting levels and the correct specification of quality products. The package we put together is direct to the client, not passing through multiple organizations.  Net result, a lighting solution tailored to the individual facility that meets or exceeds the manufacturer’s brand specifications at a competitive price to the EC sourcing it.”

All that said, let’s explore how LED lighting is a game-changer for car dealerships. How it transforms each area and why making the right upgrade matters.

1. Showroom: Where First Impressions Sell Cars

Your showroom is the heart of your sales activities. The lighting in this space should reflect that. LED lights deliver:

  • High CRI (Color Rendering Index) for a  truer color display. This is what makes the colors of the cars in the showroom pop.
  • Adjustable brightness and color temperature, perfect for creating mood or highlighting specific vehicles
  • Energy savings up to 70% over traditional metal halide or fluorescent bulbs
  • Reduced heat output, keeping the showroom cooler, more comfortable, and reduces HVAC cycling for lower usage

2. Front of House Offices: Professional, Comfortable, Efficient

Front-of-house offices host critical conversations. It’s where the business gets done. Having LED lighting in these spaces provides:

  • Soft, flicker-free illumination, reducing eye strain during long paperwork sessions
  • Consistent brightness, which supports focus and professionalism
clean and well-lit service drive welcomes customers but also makes it easier for staff to inspect vehicle exteriors

3. Service Drive: Bright, Inviting and Safe

The service drive is the first stop for most returning customers—make it shine. Benefits of LED upgrades include:

  • Instant-on lighting for dark mornings and early appointments
  • Increased safety for both employees and customers with better visibility
  • More welcoming appearance, improving customer satisfaction scores
  • Improved visibility for examining exterior vehicle issues
a brightly lit parts department makes it easier for staff to find what they're looking for and easily read small part numbers on tags

4. Parts Department: Clarity and Accuracy Count

In the parts department, accuracy is everything. LED lighting ensures:

  • Clear, shadow-free visibility in shelving and inventory areas
  • Reduced maintenance, ideal for high ceilings and hard-to-reach fixtures
  • Color-accurate illumination to distinguish between part codes and packaging
  • Reduced eye strain for staff working in the parts department
Well-lit workshops make it easier for technicians to see what they are doing both to diagnose and repair vehicles.

5. Service Workshop: Bright Light = Better Service

Workshops demand high-performance lighting for safety and precision. LED lighting here offers:

  • Durable, long-life fixtures resistant to dust, vibration, and moisture
  • Uniform light distribution across all work bays, minimizing shadows
  • Improved visibility for Techs helping them do their job better and more efficiently
  • Energy efficiency, especially important in double shift operations

6. Exterior Lighting: Visibility, Security, and Branding

Your dealership’s lot is the biggest billboard you have—especially at night. LED lighting enhances:

  • Curb appeal with bright, uniform light that makes inventory pop
  • Strategic lighting allows you to direct your clients’ eyes where you want to. If you highlight everything, you showcase nothing.
  • Security, bright even lighting reduces shadows and dark corners deterring theft and vandalism
  • Energy and maintenance savings, especially in pole-mounted or wall-pack lighting
  • Motion sensor and smart control compatibility for modern efficiency

💡 Pro Tip: Choose LED fixtures with a high lumen-per-watt (efficacy) ratio and color temperatures in the 4000K–5000K range for a daylight-like effect.

Wrapping it Up: The Bright Choice for Your Dealership.

From the showroom floor to the service bays, LED lighting is a game-changer for car dealerships. It isn’t just a smart upgrade—it’s a strategic investment. Dealerships that make the switch enjoy better visibility, lower operating costs, and a modern edge that customers notice. If management is going to invest in upgrading lighting, do it right. Source replacement LED fixtures, or UL approved retrofit kits. This is the safest way that will result in the best result for the long term. Work with a lighting specialist who can do a proper analysis of the facility and provide the best solution that’s tailored to your facility.
